La Palma La Palma lies in the north-west of the archipelago of the Canary Islands, and belongs to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. With a mean annual temperature of 18˚C, it has a subtropical climate and an enormous variety of ecosystems thanks to rainfall in some areas alone of some 1,200 liters per year. With an area of just 700 square kilometers, and despite its similarities to the archipelago, La Palma, nicknamed the "pretty island", the "green island" or the "European Hawaii", has a genuine identity of its own. With geographical, geological and natural phenomena that distinguish it not only from the rest of the Canaries but also from the other island groups in the area. Unesco declared the island a Biosphere Reserve in its totality in 2002, since 35% of its surface is made up of a National Park, 19 protected natural areas, and other reserves, monuments and places of scientific interest. It was officially designated in 2006 as the world's first Sustainable Tourist Destination, a distinction granted by UNESCO's Institute of Tourism and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Not long afterwards, in June 2012, La Palma was awarded another title. This was the Starlight Certificate, issued by the Starlight Foundation on behalf of the UNWTO and with the collaboration of UNESCO's Portal to the Heritage of Astronomy. Now that the quality of its sky, biodiversity and nocturnal landscapes has achieved full recognition, La Palma has also made itself worthy of yet another nickname: the "island of the stars". There is also a meteorological phenomena that increases the quality of life and wellness dramatically. This is the sea of clouds which forms between the altitudes of 1,200 and 1,600 meters, acting as a filter that prevents the passage of air pollution. Since the whole island is a Biosphere Reserve, it is logical that La Palma centre its tourism on nature, with active and rural tourism as its principal lures. Even so, the island also has places of architectural and cultural interest, as well as coastlines with opportunities for all sorts of activities. La Palma is distinguished by a town architecture that is characteristically colonial despite its modern touches, and by a typical rural architecture that dominates the farming regions with buildings like wine presses or cellars, granaries, mills, barns and water catchments.
